Energy

Increasing the energy efficiency of homes and appliances is a great way to reduce our demand on oil, coal, and other natural resources. In recent decades, energy efficiency has done more to decrease demand for energy than all new alternative sources of energy combined (solar, wind, and others).

HOW ARE WE DOING?

The vast majority of households in the Broadlands report that they have at least one compact fluorescent light (CFL) installed in their house, only about 10% report that they do not have any CFLs. However, slightly over half of Broadlands residents report that they do not use powerstrips to turn of their electronics when not in use.

The figure below shows the the typical home energy uses in the United States:Chart

HOW CAN I ACT

By joining the Broadlands Recycling Club and committing to taking energy efficient actions you can greatly reduce energy use in your neighborhood:

  • "Phantom load" is responsible for 10-15% of your home 's overall energy use. Phantom load is the energy that appliances use when they are plugged in and on stand-by. By using powerstrips to turn off appliances and electronics when not in use you can greatly reduce "phantom load".
  • If each household in the US replaced four 100-watt bulbs with CFLs we would save the energy output of 30 300-MW power plants
  • For every dollar a household invests in energy efficiency, consumers can save $4.00 on energy costs
