GRASSCYCLING

Grasscycling or mulch mowing is the process of leaving your grass on your lawn after you mow to decompose into the grass. This process helps improve the look of your lawn while reducing the amount of water, fertilizer, and time needed to mow your lawn. Even if you do not have a mulch mower you can still grasscycle.

ABOUT GRASSCYCLING

Each year in the US approximately 15 million tons of grass are thrown in the landfill to decompose. An typical 1 acre lawn produces nearly 7 tons of grass clippings per year! Grass left on your lawn acts a fertilizer and is made up of 80% water and 5% nitrogen- two important ingredients to a healthy lawn. Studies of grasscycling have shown that it leads to a healthier lawn and can reduce the amount of time needed to mow an average lawn by around 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does grass cycling cause thatch? NO- Thatch is caused by grass roots that contain lignin( a fibrous material). Grass clippings do not contain lignin and decompose quickly, leaving a healthy, thatch free lawn

Does grass cycling make my lawn look bad? NO- If a lawn is properly mowed, watered, and fertilized, grasscycling can actually produce a healthier looking lawn. It is important to cut the lawn frequently to produce small clippings that will decompose quickly.

Do I need a mulching mower to grasscycle? NO- About 80% of all mowers on the market are mulch mowers. However, if you do not have a mulch mower you can still grasscycle with your existing mower by removing the bag and safely covering the discharge area.
